As of this past Friday, the Labor Department reported that 533,000 jobs were lost in November, amounting to a grand total of 1.9 million layoffs so far this year. National unemployment is now at 6.7%, up more than 2% from just one year ago.
With our receding economy and increasing unemployment, we are now looking at the worst job market in 15 years.
Now that I’ve depressed you, I’ll attempt to cheer you up with some good news: not every industry is failing. Want even better news? Many industries are actually thriving and hiring.
Currently, education tops the list in gains in employment figures.
Last month alone the education industry added 9,800 new jobs and reports that there is still a great need for additional educators and related supporting roles.
So what’s with the increased demand for teachers and administration? Many newly unemployed individuals are seeking solace in education and are heading back to school to boost their academic credentials or seek a new career path.
This influx of adult students is creating a higher demand for educators both in the traditional and online degree and certification programs. In fact, enrollment in online degree programs is on the rise as it offers students the ability to attend classes and job search and attend interviews when necessary.
It makes sense that education would stand strong in the face of a recession and truly speaks to the fact that knowledge is power.
Additionally, I wanted to inform GlobalScholar members, tutors, students and readers about a free resource loaded with information regarding online degree programs and colleges – CollegeFinder.
CollegeFinder is a really great source of information if you are considering going back to school but weren’t sure where to get started. Browse through the Online Colleges tab to learn more about tuition costs, degree programs and online universities and request free information or schedule a chat with an admissions counselor.
So what about the other industries currently hiring? Here they are in descending order:
• Healthcare
• Accounting
• Energy - especially “green” energy
• Central banking
