The best time for a student to start looking for part-time work is during their junior and senior years of high school. This is a good time to make some extra money to help pay for after school or weekend activities, school dances, dates and to start saving for college.
When taking on a job in high school, students must be careful not to over work themselves and to keep up their grades. You also want to look for employers that provide flexible scheduling and time off when necessary.
Here is a list of excellent part-time jobs for high school students:
Retail sales associates job are great, as retail stores are always looking for weekend help and offer flexible scheduling. Another bonus is that many clothing stores offer the possibility of making commission in addition to a standard salary.
Coffee shops are high energy and fun places for students to work. You can make decent tip money and work with others your age.
• Host & Hostess positions
Host and hostess jobs often offer flexible scheduling and shorter shifts. This is a low stress job and you often get to share tips with servers.
Babysitting and nannying is a great way to make money. Placing fliers around your neighborhood or at local elementary schools is a great way to seek employers.
Additionally, there are several job posting sites that cater specifically to high school students. Here are a few that I recommend.
• MyFirstPaycheck
• Cool Works
• SnagAJob.com
• Teens4Hire
• Studentjobs.gov
The next thing you will need to do once you find the job, is prepare for the interview. Here are some informational videos on interviewing tips.
