Biographical Information:
Math teacher Cindi Carroll shows her students at Bowie High School in Austin the prevalence of geometry in their daily lives, from the geometric transformations involved in driving a car to the tessellations in bathroom tiles. Her students do more than learn math—they experience it, using mirrors to determine the height of various points along the school's roof and conducting statistical experiments on the popularity of different cola brands. A National Board Certified teacher and chair of Bowie's math department since 2001, Carroll was instrumental in developing a double-block schedule and motivating all of the school's math teachers to follow it. This reform helped math achievement soar schoolwide, with 97 percent of her 11th graders passing the math exit exam and 80 percent of her ninth graders achieving a "Commended" rating on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS™). In addition to teaching, Carroll co-sponsors the SWAT (Students Working All Together) Club, which she co-created in 1999. The club raises awareness of teen-related issues through meetings and events while helping students develop lifelong leadership skills.
