Biographical Information:
Math teacher Yannabah Lewis has co-created and co-coordinated a nationally recognized citizenship program at Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona. Along with co-creator David Huitt, Lewis and a team of two other teachers work with students to plan and broadcast daily citizenship lessons on closed-circuit TV to all of the school's teachers and students, and to the broader West Hawaii community. The program has earned recognition and support from Hawaii's lieutenant governor, state legislators and national organizations. Lewis and Huitt also delivered a presentation on the citizenship program at the Public Policy Workshop, an international conference sponsored by the Kettering Foundation for the advancement of civic responsibility through education. Lewis is a highly effective AP calculus and honors math teacher, and is the facilitator for the math department. Under her leadership, the tenth-grade class has made significant schoolwide gains on the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) over the past two years. She is also co-advisor of the Interact Club, a service club with over 200 student members that has been named Outstanding State Interact Club for the past six years.
