Biographical Information:
Teacher Mikki Nuckols has embraced a variety of innovative teaching strategies and initiatives to help her students improve their reading and writing at Rocky Mountain Middle School in Idaho Falls. From Six Traits of Writing to reading and writing across the curriculum, Nuckols not only receives the appropriate training and implements each initiative in her classroom with energy and enthusiasm, but also helps her fellow teachers do the same. Her research-based instructional practices, excellent communication skills, high expectations and outstanding rapport with young people have helped her achieve strong, consistent academic growth among students at all levels. Nuckols is a literacy focus team leader for the school's implementation of a Southern Regional Education Board grant called Making Middle Grades Work. She was also one of the key players in implementing professional development and schoolwide improvement strategies for a three-year Comprehensive School Reform grant from the state. As a member of the district-level curriculum committee, she was instrumental in aligning the curriculum to state standards, and she has mentored several language arts teachers both in her school and throughout the district.
