Biographical Information:
In Eric Kessler's classroom at Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park, students learn science through hands-on experience. Combining inquiry-based instruction with weekly field trips, Kessler has had his students wading in streams looking for macro-invertebrates, obtaining samples from local water sources and even backpacking in Colorado for a mountain ecology class. An active member of the Kansas Herpetological Society, Kessler often involves students in his own research projects, from tagging reptiles to documenting the effect of urban encroachment on reptile populations. Chair of the school's technology committee, Kessler has developed Web-based resources that provide students with pertinent information prior to their field trips, and created a curriculum-aligned Web site that enables students to learn more about biology topics. All of his students typically score three or higher on the AP Biology exam, and as many as half of his students score a five. A National Board Certified teacher, Kessler is a member of the Blue Valley Wilderness Science Center's development committee and an adjunct instructor for the Kansas City Metropolitan Community College System.
