Building a strong educational foundation for your child starts at the preschool level and continues through each additional tier. Your child’s school should provide a nurturing environment where they can improve upon their natural abilities and skills and advance their mind through a creative and interactive curriculum.
So how do you know you are making the right decision? You can start by viewing all of your options and use online resource sites, such as Preschool Finder and SchoolFinder, to view all of the schools in your area. Then, decide if you want to go public or private, as this makes a significant difference in the education your child will receive.
Steps to take when choosing a school
1. Assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses, natural abilities and interests. You should pick a school that will nurture your child’s abilities and personality and be a positive place for growth.
2. Check out all schools in your geographic area.
3. Visit the schools on your list. Rate them based on the campus, building condition, administration, etc.
4. Talk to administrators about the school’s mission and educational approach. Look for visionary leadership and clear examples of how their mission is carried out.
5. Ask about the credentials and teaching experience of the faculty.
6. Check out the size of the school, including number of students, classroom size and teacher to student ratios.
7. Ask about parent involvement opportunities and talk with the school’s PTSA.
8. Check out the diversity of the school and community involvement.
9. Look for school spirit: do the students seem excited and happy to be there?
10. Check out the list of extracurricular activities.
Apart from your personal evaluation, also ask for your child’s input. Since they will be spending the time there, it is important that they feel good about the school and agree with your decision. Also be sure to talk with other parents, as personal experience is the best information you can receive.
